Hire a car or van and take a road trip

I have been lucky enough to take road trips along the coasts of South Australia and Queensland, through the Northern Territory’s Top End and Kangaroo Island, and around Tasmania.

Australia is vast, and having a car is the best way to truly experience the country. Each state is unique: explore beaches in South Australia, waterfalls in Queensland and the outback in the Northern Territory.

Visit the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in Sydney

Even though I was born in Sydney, I still love playing tourist and visiting these iconic sights. Head down to Circular Quay to get to the Opera House or jump on a public ferry for views of the Harbour from the water.

For views over the city and a once in a lifetime experience, climb the Harbour Bridge with BridgeClimb – I promise it’s not that scary!

While the Opera House is best admired from the exterior, you can also go inside and watch a show.

Explore the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland

There are multiple ways to experience the largest coral reef system in the world. Take a scenic flight from Airlie Beach, spend a few nights snorkelling or scuba diving from a boat, or take a day trip from Cairns.

Visit Uluru in the Northern Territory

One of the most famous landmarks of Australia, a visit to the stunning red rock formation in the heart of the Australian Outback is an essential bucketlist item. While I am yet to experience this, it’s firmly at the top of my bucketlist!

Drive along the Great Ocean Road

Another iconic sight in Australia is the twelve apostles along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. This stunning drive features stunning coastal views and rock formations.

Go wildlife spotting

Australia is known for its native wildlife. Go wildlife spotting and see kangaroos, koalas, and other unique animals in their natural habitats.

You will find kangaroos in many country areas, especially around dawn and dusk. To see koalas, head to Taronga Zoo in Sydney or the Australia Reptile Park, an hour north of Sydney.

Go beach hopping

Many people argue that Queensland boasts the best beaches in Australia, but if you head down to South Australia or Tasmania, you’ll find the most stunning untouched beaches.

PS: don’t fall into the trap of thinking Bondi is the best beach in Sydney: you can find many less crowded and nicer spots by venturing outside the city.

Visit the Hunter Valley

Located 3hrs from Sydney, you’ll find the stunning Hunter Valley wine region. This area has plenty to see and do, including wine tastings, hot air ballooning, horse riding and more.

Go hiking in Tasmania

Many mistake the southernmost state as a separate island, but Tasmania is in fact, one of the most picturesque locations in Australia. With its rugged coastlines, national parks, wildlife and gorgeous hikes, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The best time to visit in summer and I recommend hiring a van to explore the state.

Swim in all the waterfalls in Queensland

Take a day trip from Cairns to explore the waterfall circuit in the Atherton Tablelands. Spend the day waterfall hopping and cool off in the clear, fresh water.

If you’re in Airlie Beach, a trip to Cedar Creek Falls is essential!

Road trip in Australia’s Top End

The Northern Territory has it all – from experiencing culture of the Indigenous Communities, to cruising the Billabong at Kakadu National Park, swimming in waterholes and spotting crocodiles in the wild, it truly is a beautiful part of the world. Hire a car to explore the beautiful Top End.
